What is reefer freight?

Anyone can rent a refrigerated trailer. The product is the proof — that the set-point held from your dock to theirs.

The rule of the mode

A reefer holds temperature. It does not chill warm freight down. Everything in cold-chain discipline — pre-cool, pulp temp, continuous mode — follows from that one fact.

Temperature-controlled (reefer) freight is cargo transported in a refrigerated trailer that holds a specified set-point temperature — anywhere from −20°F deep frozen to 70°F climate-controlled ambient— for the entire journey, with the temperature continuously recorded as proof. The refrigeration unit (“reefer unit,” almost always a diesel-powered Carrier or Thermo Kingmounted on the trailer’s nose) both cools and heats, which is why the same equipment protects ice cream through Phoenix in July and chocolate through Winnipeg in January.

The unit’s operating mode matters more than most shippers realize. In start/stop (cycle-sentry) mode the engine shuts off at set-point and restarts when the box drifts — it saves fuel, but air temperature swings several degrees between cycles. In continuous modethe unit runs non-stop, holding the box inside a degree or two and keeping air moving through the load. Frozen goods, produce, floral and all pharma ride continuous; the fuel difference is trivial next to one rejected load. Specifying the mode is part of a competent reefer quote — and it’s printed on ours.

Frozen, chilled, or climate-controlled — what reefer covers

Reefer is not one temperature; it’s a 90-degree spectrum. Deep frozen (−20°F) for ice cream and frozen seafood. Frozen(−10 to 0°F) for meat, vegetables and bakery. Chilled(32–39°F) — the busiest band on the road — for produce, dairy, deli and fresh protein. Cool(40–55°F) for floral and select pharma. And climate-controlled ambient(up to 70°F) for chocolate, cosmetics, wine and electronics that simply must not freeze or bake. Pharma adds its own bands on top: 2–8°C for biologics and vaccines, −20°Cfor frozen drug product, and 59–77°F controlled room temperature. One mode, many disciplines — the spectrum below maps all of them.

Why air temperature isn’t enough (pulp temp)

The return-air sensor on a reefer unit measures the aircoming back off the load — and air lies. Load 26 pallets of warm product into a perfectly pre-cooled trailer and the air can read 36°F within minutes, while the product core sits at 50°F and stays there, because a trailer unit can’t extract field heat from 40,000 lb of cargo in transit. Pulp temperature— a calibrated probe inserted into the product itself — is the only number that describes the freight rather than its atmosphere. Qeep drivers verify pulp temp at loading and record it on the BOL, and re-verify at delivery when your SOP requires it. It’s the difference between proving the cold chain held and arguing about it.

What FSMA requires of a refrigerated carrier

Since the FSMA Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart O) took effect, temperature control for food in transit has been a legal obligation, not a best practice. At a high level the rule requires shippers and carriers to agree — in writing — on temperature and sanitation requirements; to verify the trailer is pre-cooled and clean before loading; to demonstrate the temperature was controlled throughout transit; to train personnel; and to maintain records. In other words: federal law now expects exactly the documentation discipline a good cold-chain broker was already enforcing. “Refrigerated” is really a documented chain of custody of temperature — the trailer is just the instrument.

What drives a reefer rate

Lane + base rate

Reefer FTL runs roughly 15–30% above dry van on the same lane — the trailers cost more, burn more fuel, and there are fewer of them. Produce-heavy corridors swing hard with harvest seasons; a Salinas lane in June is not a Salinas lane in January.

Two fuel bills, not one

The reefer unit burns diesel from its own tank, separately from the truck — typically $50–200 of reefer fuel per long-haul load, more in continuous mode at deep-frozen set-points in summer heat. It appears as its own line, not buried in the linehaul.

What shippers ask before the first cold load.

What temperature range can your reefers maintain?
From −20°F — the deep-frozen set-point for ice cream and frozen seafood — up to 70°F climate-controlled ambient for chocolate, cosmetics and shelf-stable pharma. The diesel-powered refrigeration unit (Carrier or Thermo King) holds the set-point you specify, heating as well as cooling, so the same trailer protects frozen freight in a Texas summer and floral in a Manitoba winter. Multi-temp trailers can hold 2–3 different set-points simultaneously behind movable bulkheads.
How do you verify the trailer was pre-cooled before loading?
The driver documents the trailer’s air temperature on the BOL before a single pallet loads, and the telematics log shows the unit running at set-point ahead of arrival. For high-risk loads — pharma, ice cream, seafood — we require a 15-minute pre-cool soak with photographic evidence of the reefer display. A trailer that arrives warm gets rejected and re-dispatched before it can pull heat out of your product, because a reefer unit is built to hold temperature, not to chill warm freight down.
What happens if the temperature deviates in transit?
Telematics push set-point and actual temperature every 5–15 minutes. If the actual drifts more than ±2°F from set-point for more than 15 minutes, an automated alert hits our control tower and a human picks up the phone. The playbook escalates fast: driver contacted to check the unit and door seals, carrier maintenance dispatched if the unit is faulting, and — worst case — a transload to a healthy reefer coordinated before the product crosses its spoilage threshold. The deviation, the response and the resolution all land in the temp log you receive at delivery.
Do you offer multi-temp trailers?
Yes — 2-zone and 3-zone multi-temp reefers with movable bulkheads and independent evaporators per zone. The classic use case is foodservice distribution: frozen at −10°F in the nose, chilled dairy at 36°F in the middle, and produce at 38°F at the doors, all on one trailer, one driver, one invoice. Pallet count per zone varies with the bulkhead split, and multi-temp typically adds $200–500 over a single-temp load — still far cheaper than running two trucks.
What is pulp temperature, and why isn't air temperature enough?
Pulp temperature is the internal temperature of the product itself, measured by inserting a calibrated probe — versus air temperature, which is just the atmosphere around it. Air temp can read a perfect 36°F minutes after the doors close even when the pallets inside were loaded warm, and a reefer unit cannot pull field heat out of 40,000 lb of product in transit. That’s why our drivers verify pulp temp at loading and record it on the BOL: it catches warm-loaded freight before it becomes your claim, and it proves the product — not just the air — was at spec when it left the dock.
How do you comply with the FSMA Sanitary Transportation Rule?
The FSMA Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart O) makes temperature control and sanitation a documented, legal obligation for anyone shipping food by road. Qeep operates as the rule expects: a written agreement defining temperature and sanitation requirements on every food load, pre-cool verification before loading, continuous temperature records retained for 12 months, washed and sanitized trailers between loads, FSMA-trained drivers and dispatchers, and written corrective-action procedures for any deviation. We only tender food freight to carriers who can evidence the same.
What about cargo insurance for spoilage?
Standard carrier cargo policies cover $100,000 per load, but many exclude or limit spoilage caused by reefer breakdown — read the fine print before you find out at claim time. For higher-value perishables, pharma and premium seafood we arrange specific spoilage and reefer-breakdown coverage through the carrier’s broker before dispatch. And because every Qeep reefer load travels with a continuous temp log plus pulp-temp verification at both ends, the root cause of any loss is documented — which is exactly what makes a spoilage claim payable instead of disputable.
