Overview

Reefer freight where the cold chain has to hold, every mile.

Refrigerated trailers (“reefers”) maintain set-point temperature from -20°F (deep frozen) up to 70°F (climate-controlled ambient) using diesel-powered refrigeration units (Carrier, Thermo King). The FSMA Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule (21 CFR Part 1, Subpart O) requires a written carrier agreement, pre-cooled trailer verification, continuous temperature logging, sanitized trailer between loads, and corrective action procedures. Qeep’s reefer carriers are FSMA-compliant, GDP-trained for pharma where required, and equipped with continuous-monitoring telematics that push temp data to your account in real time.

How it works

From quote to POD, step by step.

1

Quote with set-point + commodity

Tell us the temperature, commodity, and whether you need multi-temp or single-temp. We quote with FSMA-compliant carriers only.

2

Trailer wash + pre-cool verification

Carrier washes trailer between loads (organic-certified wash if your commodity requires). Pre-cools to set point before pickup — driver documents wash + pre-cool temp before loading.

3

Loaded pulp-temp check

Pulp temperature of the cargo (not just air temp) is verified at loading and recorded on the BOL. Catches pre-loaded warm freight before it costs you a claim.

4

Continuous logging in transit

Reefer unit + telematics push set-point and actual temp every 5-15 minutes to a temp log. Alerts trigger if temp deviates >2°F from set-point for >15 minutes.

5

Delivery with temp report

Signed POD + complete temp log (CSV or PDF) pushed to your account. Pulp temp re-verified at delivery if your SOP requires.

What drives the rate?

Transparent inputs, not mystery margins. Here’s exactly what goes into a temperature controlled quote.

Get my rate
Lane + base rate
Reefer FTL runs ~15-30% above dry van on the same lane due to limited capacity
Fuel surcharge (truck + reefer)
Reefer unit burns diesel separately. Reefer fuel can add $50-200 per long-haul load
Temperature range
Deep frozen (-10°F or colder) costs more than chilled (35°F) — unit works harder
Multi-stop / multi-temp
Each additional stop adds $50-150. Multi-temp loads add ~$200-500 over single-temp
Pre-cool / wash requirements
Standard included. Organic-certified or sanitized-to-spec adds $50-150

Frequently asked

Temperature Controlled questions, answered.

What temperature range can your reefers maintain?
From -20°F (deep frozen ice cream, frozen seafood) up to 70°F (climate-controlled cosmetics). Multi-temp trailers can hold 2-3 different set points simultaneously.
How do you verify the trailer was pre-cooled?
The driver documents trailer air temperature before loading on the BOL. For high-risk loads we require a 15-minute pre-cool soak with photographic evidence of the reefer display.
What happens if temperature deviates in transit?
Automated alerts go to our control tower if temp deviates more than 2°F from set-point for more than 15 minutes. Our team contacts the driver immediately and coordinates corrective action (carrier dispatch, transload, etc.) before damage occurs.
Do you offer multi-temp trailers?
Yes — 2-zone and 3-zone multi-temp trailers with movable bulkheads. Common use: frozen + chilled together for foodservice distribution.
What about cargo insurance for spoilage?
Standard $100k coverage. For higher-value perishables we add specific spoilage coverage with the carrier’s broker. Recommended for pharma and high-value seafood.
