How to Determine Freight Class: The Complete LTL Guide

Freight class explained in plain English — density calculation, the NMFC class chart from 50 to 500, and how to avoid costly reclassification fees on LTL shipments.

If you ship LTL (less-than-truckload) freight, freight class decides what you pay — and getting it wrong is one of the most common, most expensive mistakes in shipping. This guide explains what freight class is, how to calculate it from density in three steps, and how to keep carriers from reclassifying your freight after pickup.

What is freight class?

Freight class is a standardized rating system used by LTL carriers across North America to price freight consistently. It comes from the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC), maintained by the NMFTA. Every commodity is assigned a class between 50 and 500: the lower the class, the denser and easier to handle the freight — and the cheaper it is to ship. A pallet of bricks might rate class 50; a pallet of ping-pong balls can rate class 500.

Class is determined by four transportation characteristics:

  • Density — pounds per cubic foot. The dominant factor for most freight today.
  • Stowability — how well it loads with other freight (odd shapes, hazmat restrictions).
  • Handling — ease of loading and unloading.
  • Liability — value, fragility, theft risk, perishability.

Step 1: Calculate your shipment's density

Measure the length, width and height of the shipment in inches — as it ships, pallet and packaging included, at the tallest, widest points. Then weigh it, packaging and pallet included.

  • Cubic feet = (Length × Width × Height in inches) ÷ 1,728
  • Density = Weight in pounds ÷ Cubic feet

Example: a standard 48″ × 40″ pallet loaded to 48″ high weighing 500 lb: 48 × 40 × 48 = 92,160 in³ ÷ 1,728 = 53.3 ft³. Density = 500 ÷ 53.3 = 9.4 lb/ft³ → class 100 on a density basis.

Step 2: Read the freight class density chart

For density-rated commodities, this is the standard mapping used across the industry:

Note: the NMFC has been moving more commodities to pure density-based classing, but many items still carry commodity-specific rules where stowability, handling or liability override density. When in doubt, confirm the NMFC item number with your carrier or broker — guessing is what generates reclass bills.

Step 3: Find the NMFC item number

Density gets you close, but LTL carriers rate against the specific NMFC item number for your commodity — “machine parts, boxed” and “machined castings” are different items with different rules. The item number goes on your Bill of Lading next to the class. A shipment with a correct NMFC number and class almost never gets re-billed; a BOL that just says “freight, class 70” invites inspection.

What happens if you get freight class wrong

  • Reclassification fees. Carriers weigh and dimension freight at the terminal. If your stated class is too low, they re-bill at the correct class — plus an inspection fee.
  • Invoice disputes and delays. Reclass invoices arrive weeks later and are hard to fight without photos and certified scale tickets.
  • Damaged carrier relationships. Repeated misclassification flags your freight for inspection every time it moves.

Five ways to keep LTL class costs down

  • Densify. Shrink packaging, cube out pallets — higher density means a lower class and rate.
  • Measure honestly, every time. Overhang and pallet height count. Carriers use laser dimensioners; eyeballing loses.
  • Document. Photograph packed freight with a tape measure visible, and keep scale weights.
  • Ask about FAK agreements. Higher-volume shippers can negotiate Freight All Kinds pricing that caps class disputes entirely.
  • Let your broker fight reclasses. A good partner audits carrier invoices and disputes bad reclasses with evidence — it's part of what you're paying for.

The other three factors: handling, stowability, liability

Density gets almost all the attention in freight class, but it is only one of four characteristics the classification system actually weighs, and the other three explain why two shipments of identical density can carry different classes. Handling covers how difficult the freight is to move: fragile, awkward, hazardous, or specially handled goods are harder to work and class accordingly. Stowability covers how well the freight loads with other freight: something that cannot be stacked, is oddly shaped, or cannot ride next to certain commodities takes up more usable trailer space than its density suggests.

Liability is the fourth factor and the one shippers underestimate most. It reflects how likely the freight is to be damaged, to damage other freight, to be stolen, or to spoil, and high-liability goods class higher because the carrier is carrying more risk. This is why a light, dense, but valuable and fragile item can class far higher than its density alone would put it, and why understanding your freight’s risk profile matters as much as measuring its dimensions.

For a shipper, the lesson is that class is not a pure density calculation even when density drives it. A product that is dense but hazardous, fragile, or hard to stack will not class where the density chart alone suggests, and being surprised by that is avoidable if you understand the four factors together. Density-based classes versus fixed NMFC classes

A crucial distinction that trips up shippers is that not every commodity is classed by its density at all. Some products have a fixed class assigned by their NMFC item number regardless of how dense a particular shipment is, while others are genuinely density-based, with the class determined by the pounds per cubic foot you calculate. Knowing which category your product falls into decides whether measuring and improving density will change your class or make no difference at all.

For density-based commodities, the work of measuring accurately and packing tightly pays off directly, because a denser shipment lands in a lower, cheaper class. For fixed-class commodities, the class is set by what the item is, and no amount of clever packing changes it, so the effort belongs elsewhere, in accurate description, correct NMFC item selection, and making sure the freight is not accidentally classed under a worse item than it deserves. Spending time optimising density on a fixed-class item is wasted effort.

The practical step is to find your product’s NMFC item and understand how it is classed before you try to manage the class. If it is density-based, your packaging and dimensions are levers; if it is fixed, your description and item selection are what matter. Disputing a reweigh or reclassification bill

When a carrier reweighs or reclassifies a shipment and sends a corrected bill, a shipper’s instinct is often to pay it, but a reclassification is not always correct and it can be disputed with the right evidence. Carriers run freight across automated dimensioners and scales, and while these are usually accurate, they can be wrong, the freight can have been measured with unusual overhang, or the reclassification can rest on a debatable NMFC interpretation. A corrected bill is a claim, and like any claim it can be challenged.

The dispute rises or falls on documentation you captured at the shipment’s origin. Accurate weight and dimension records taken before pickup, photographs of the palletized freight, and a clear basis for the class you declared are what let you push back on a reclassification that does not match reality. A shipper who measured carefully and kept the record is in a strong position; one who guessed and kept nothing usually has to accept the correction, right or wrong.

The defensive lesson reinforces the offensive one: measuring and documenting accurately at origin both prevents most reclassifications and equips you to fight the ones that are wrong. A corrected bill is not automatically a final bill, and treating every reclassification as unchallengeable leaves money on the table on freight that was classed correctly the first time.

How packaging and palletizing change your class

For density-based freight, packaging is one of the few levers a shipper directly controls over their class, and small changes can move a shipment into a cheaper category. Because density is weight over volume, anything that reduces the volume without adding much weight raises the density and can lower the class. Packing product more tightly, choosing a pallet sized to the freight rather than oversized, and eliminating wasted space inside cartons all push density in the right direction.

Overhang is the packaging mistake that most often works against a shipper. Freight that extends past the pallet footprint is measured at its largest dimensions, inflating the calculated volume, lowering the density, and pushing the class higher and the cost up. Building loads square and within the pallet footprint keeps the measured volume honest, and it is the single easiest packaging change most shippers can make to protect their class.

Better packaging pays twice, because the same tight, square, well-built pallet that improves density also survives LTL handling better and reduces damage and reclassification. On density-based freight, packaging is not just protection; it is a direct input to the price. Freight class on cross-border LTL

Freight class is a North American classification system, which means it applies to cross-border LTL as well as domestic, but the border adds wrinkles a shipper should understand. The same NMFC framework generally governs the class, so a product’s class does not change simply because it crosses the border, but the cross-border move layers customs classification, the harmonized tariff code, on top of the freight class, and the two are different systems serving different purposes that both have to be right.

The practical point is that a cross-border LTL shipment has to satisfy two classification regimes at once. The freight class determines the LTL rate, and the tariff classification determines the duty and clearance treatment, and getting one right does not get the other right. Shippers who confuse the two, or who assume the customs broker handles the freight class or the carrier handles the tariff code, can find themselves wrong on the side they neglected.

On top of that, the fixed border costs on a cross-border LTL shipment fall harder on freight that classes high or ships small, because those costs are a larger share of a smaller, more expensive shipment. That is one more reason to get the class right and, where it helps, to consolidate small cross-border shipments. Building a class reference for your products

For a shipper who moves the same products repeatedly, the highest-return piece of freight-class work is building a simple reference that records the correct class, NMFC item, and typical density for each product once, so it does not have to be re-derived every time a shipment is booked. Determining a class from scratch on every load is slow and error-prone, and the errors are what generate reclassifications; a maintained product reference turns that recurring work into a lookup.

The reference is worth getting right because it compounds. Each product’s entry, its accurate weight and dimensions, its NMFC item, whether it is density-based or fixed, and its correct class, is derived once with care and then reused on every shipment, which spreads the effort of getting it right across all the freight that follows. A product that was classified accurately and documented once stops being a source of surprise bills.

Maintaining it matters as much as building it, because classifications and products change. A product that is redesigned, repackaged, or reformulated may class differently, and the classification system itself is periodically updated, so the reference is reviewed rather than set and forgotten. When a class is genuinely uncertain

Sometimes a product does not map cleanly to an obvious class, and pretending otherwise is how shippers end up with the reclassifications they were trying to avoid. New products, unusual commodities, items that could plausibly fall under more than one NMFC description, and freight whose characteristics sit on the boundary between two classes are all genuinely uncertain, and the honest response is to resolve the uncertainty deliberately rather than guess and hope the carrier agrees.

The way to resolve it is with evidence and, where the stakes justify it, an authoritative determination. Accurate specifications, density calculations, and a careful reading of the relevant NMFC descriptions will settle most cases, and where real doubt remains, a formal classification determination gives certainty that a guess never will. Paying to get an ambiguous class right once is far cheaper than absorbing repeated reclassifications and disputes on every shipment of that product.

The cost of unresolved uncertainty is that it recurs. An item that is guessed at rather than determined will be re-guessed, re-argued, and periodically reclassified for as long as it ships, and each event carries a corrected bill and an inspection fee.
