Out-of-gauge loads can't simply follow the fastest interstate. Engineers must verify bridge weight ratings, low-clearance structures, utility wire heights and curve radii for every route segment. Missing a 14'2" overpass or a posted bridge limit can strand a 180-tonne load mid-move — or worse, cause structural damage that triggers costly legal liability.

Multi-State & Cross-Border Permit Coordination

State & Provincial Oversize / Overweight Permits (49 CFR Part 350 + state codes)

Any load exceeding 8'6" wide, 13'6" tall, 53' long or 80,000 lb GVW requires a permit from every state or province it transits. Super loads — typically above 120,000 lb or extreme dimensions — also require engineering route surveys and may trigger mandatory police escort requirements in specific jurisdictions.

FMCSA Cargo Securement Standards (49 CFR Part 393)

Federal rules mandate minimum tie-down working load limits, blocking and bracing requirements, and chain/binder specifications based on commodity weight. For industrial machinery and out-of-gauge cargo, securement plans must account for forward, rearward and lateral forces; non-compliance can void insurance and result in out-of-service orders.

Bridge Formula & Weight Distribution (23 USC 127)

Federal bridge formula limits axle-group weights to protect highway infrastructure. For heavy project cargo, axle spread and load distribution across a multi-axle trailer must be engineered to keep each axle group within legal limits — or a specific bridge-rating waiver must be obtained from the relevant highway authority.

Pilot Car & Escort Vehicle Requirements (State & Provincial Regulations)

Most states require certified escort/pilot car operators who have completed a state-approved training program. Requirements for escort vehicle equipment (flags, signs, amber lights, height poles) vary by jurisdiction. Some states require the pilot car operator to hold a specific commercial licence; others accept a basic driver's licence with a company certification card.

Canadian Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG) for Oilfield Loads

Oilfield equipment moves in Canada that involve residual hydrocarbons or pressurized vessels may require TDG classification, placarding and shipping documents even if the primary commodity is equipment rather than a chemical product. Rigging, crane windows and site access

On industrial freight the truck is rarely the hard part. The hard part is what happens in the ninety minutes at each end, when a piece that cost six figures is lifted onto or off a trailer by equipment that has to be booked, positioned and paid for whether the truck is there or not. A crane window is an appointment with a cost attached, and a load that arrives two hours late does not simply deliver late, it forfeits the window and waits for the next one. That is why industrial deliveries are planned backwards from the lift rather than forwards from the pickup.

Responsibility for rigging has to be settled in writing before the load moves. Who supplies the crane or forklift, who provides the slings and spreader bars, who signs the lift plan, who is responsible if the piece is damaged during the lift and whether the driver is permitted to participate at all are all separate questions with different answers at different sites. Leaving them to be worked out on the day is how a delivery turns into a standoff on a job site with a crane on the clock.

Access decides feasibility before anything else does. Ground bearing capacity after rain, turning radius at the entrance, overhead power lines, gate width, low bridges on the approach and whether the last kilometre is a public road at all determine whether an oversize load can physically reach the point of use. These are answered with a route survey and, where the piece justifies it, a site visit, and the answers change with the season. A route that works in August across compacted ground can be impassable in April.

The securement engineering also belongs at the planning stage. Odd-shaped industrial pieces do not fit standard tie-down patterns, and the number, rating and placement of chains and straps has to reflect where the piece can actually take load without deforming. On heavy or high-value pieces this is worked out with the manufacturer before loading, documented, and given to the driver, so that an enforcement inspection at a scale becomes a paperwork exercise rather than an argument at the roadside.

Project Logistics

Project freight staging and delivery sequencing

Capital projects fail on sequence more often than on transport. A plant expansion or a line installation needs components to arrive in the order they are installed, and a piece that arrives three weeks early is not an achievement, it is an obstruction taking up space and accumulating risk on a site with nowhere to put it. Project freight is therefore scheduled to the installation plan, and the freight provider needs visibility of that plan rather than a list of shipments with dates attached to them.

Staging is the mechanism that makes sequencing possible. A warehouse or laydown yard near the site absorbs the difference between when a supplier is ready to ship and when the site is ready to receive, which lets suppliers ship efficiently and lets the site call material forward as it needs it. It also gives you a place to inspect, unpack, consolidate and re-kit before the final move, which is far easier off the critical path than on it. For most projects the staging cost is smaller than the cost of a single week of schedule slip.

Long-lead and imported pieces need their own treatment. Equipment coming from overseas arrives on a vessel schedule that does not care about the construction calendar, often through a port a long way from the site, and the inland leg may involve permits, escorts and a route that has to be surveyed. Building that lead time into the project schedule at the start, rather than discovering it when the vessel berths, is the single most valuable thing a freight partner contributes to a project of any size.

Multi-modal is normal on this work rather than exotic. A single component can move by ocean vessel, then rail, then heavy-haul truck, and in some regions by barge, with a transfer at each interface. Every transfer is a lift, a handover of liability and an opportunity for damage, so the right number of modes is the smallest number that gets the piece there legally and on time rather than the cheapest combination on paper. We price the options against the schedule and the risk together, and we say plainly when the cheaper routing is the one more likely to miss the installation date.

Finally, documentation is a deliverable in its own right on project work. Packing lists tied to purchase orders, photographs at loading and delivery, weight and dimension records, permit copies and proof of condition at each handover are what let a claim be resolved and a milestone be certified. We keep that file as the project runs rather than assembling it afterwards, because reconstructing who handled what six months later is usually impossible and always expensive.

When do I need an oversize permit for an industrial shipment?
Any load exceeding 8’6″ (102 inches) wide, 13’6″ tall, 53 feet of trailer length, or 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight needs an oversize or overweight permit for each state or province it crosses. Loads above roughly 120,000 lb gross are typically classified as super loads, which require engineering route surveys, extended lead times and often police escorts.
What is the difference between an RGN and a double-drop trailer?
An RGN (removable gooseneck) has a detachable neck that lowers to ground level so equipment can be driven or rolled onto the deck without a ramp. A double-drop (also called a lowboy) has a fixed gooseneck and a well between the axle groups that sits very close to the ground, giving a low deck height for tall cargo. RGNs are preferred for self-propelled machinery; double-drops for fixed equipment where deck height clearance is the primary concern.
How far in advance do I need to book a project cargo move?
Lead time depends on load dimensions and corridor complexity. A straightforward oversize move in a single state can be arranged in 3–5 business days once dimensions are confirmed. Multi-state super loads with bridge surveys and utility coordination typically need 3–6 weeks. Wind turbine component or transformer moves on restricted corridors can require 8–12 weeks. Earlier is always better — permit windows are date-specific and can’t always be moved.
