The short answer

53 foot trailer dimensions in one paragraph

A 53 foot dry van trailer is 53 feet long, 102 inches wide and usually 13 feet 6 inches high outside (16.15 × 2.59 × 4.11 m). Inside it is about 52 feet 6 inches long, 98 to 101 inches wide and 108 to 110 inches high, with roughly 3,800 to 4,000 cubic feet of space. It carries about 42,000 to 45,000 lb and holds 26 standard 48 by 40 pallets loaded straight, or up to 30 turned, in a single layer.

The numbers

53 foot trailer dimensions, inside and out

A 53 foot dry van is the standard full truckload trailer across Canada and the US. Its outside size is fixed close to the legal limits. Its inside size varies by a few inches with the wall construction, so carriers quote ranges and you should plan to the lower end.

Pallet capacity

How many pallets fit in a 53 foot trailer

Standard 48 by 40 inch pallets loaded with the 48 inch side along the trailer go two across and 13 rows deep, which is 26 in a single layer. Turned so the 40 inch side runs along the trailer, they still go two across but fit 15 rows, which is 30. Turning needs pallets a forklift can enter from the long side, so check before you plan on it.

Stacking doubles the count if the freight can carry the weight above it and two loaded pallets stay under the inside height, about 108 inches. In practice, most stackable loads hit the weight limit before they fill a double-stacked trailer.

An estimate, using a conservative inside size of 630 × 98 × 108 inches and about 45,000 lb of payload. It counts straight rows only. Mixed or pinwheel patterns can fit more, and some trailers are wider and taller inside. Axle weights and the receiver's unloading also shape a real load plan.

Weight

Weight limits: why loads weigh out before they cube out

A 53 foot trailer can usually carry about 42,000 to 45,000 lb. That limit is set by road weight laws, not by the trailer. In the US the usual gross limit is 80,000 lb for the tractor, trailer and cargo together, with limits per axle group as well, so the payload is whatever is left once the empty truck is weighed.

Canadian provinces set their own limits and allow higher gross weights on some axle configurations. A load that will cross into the US is planned to the US limit, because that is where it would be overweight.

Dense freight such as paper rolls, beverages, tile and canned goods reaches the weight limit with much of the floor still empty. Light, bulky freight runs out of floor first. Either way, the rate is for the trailer, so a full truckload is priced the same whichever limit you reach.

53 foot trailer questions, answered.

What are the dimensions of a 53 foot trailer?

A 53 foot dry van trailer is 53 feet long, 8 feet 6 inches (102 inches) wide and usually 13 feet 6 inches high on the outside. Inside it is about 52 feet 6 inches long, 98 to 101 inches wide and 108 to 110 inches high, depending on how the trailer is built.

How tall is a 53 foot trailer in metres?

A standard 53 foot dry van is about 4.11 metres (13 feet 6 inches) tall on the outside, measured from the road with the trailer hitched to a tractor. Inside, the height is about 2.74 to 2.79 metres. Canada's usual legal height limit is 4.15 metres.

How many pallets fit in a 53 foot trailer?

A 53 foot trailer holds 26 standard 48 by 40 inch pallets loaded straight, two across and 13 rows deep, in a single layer. Turned so the 40 inch side runs along the trailer, it fits up to 30. If the pallets can be stacked and stay under the inside height, those numbers can double, as long as the load stays within the weight limit.

How many skids fit in a 53 foot trailer?

Skid and pallet are used interchangeably in Canada, so the answer is the same: 26 standard 48 by 40 skids loaded straight, or up to 30 turned, single stacked. Larger 48 by 48 skids fit 26. Use the [pallet calculator](#calculator) for other sizes.

How much weight can a 53 foot trailer carry?

A 53 foot dry van usually carries about 42,000 to 45,000 lb (19,000 to 20,400 kg). The limit comes from road weight laws rather than the trailer: in the US the usual gross limit is 80,000 lb for the tractor, trailer and cargo together, so the payload is what is left after the empty truck. Canadian provinces allow higher gross weights on some axle configurations.

What is the cubic capacity of a 53 foot trailer?

About 3,800 to 4,000 cubic feet, or roughly 108 to 113 cubic metres, depending on the inside width and height. In practice most loads reach the weight limit or run out of floor positions before they fill the cube.

What is a dry van trailer?

A dry van is an enclosed, unrefrigerated trailer: a weatherproof box that protects palletized, boxed and floor-loaded freight from rain, road spray and theft. The 53 foot dry van is the standard trailer for full truckload freight in North America. See dry van trucking for how loads are booked.

What is a 28 foot pup trailer?

A pup is a short trailer, about 28 feet long, used mainly in LTL networks and city delivery, often pulled in pairs. Inside it is about 27 feet 6 inches long, 98 inches wide and 108 inches high, with about 22,000 lb of payload and room for 12 to 14 standard pallets.

Is a 53 foot reefer the same size as a dry van?

Nearly, but it has a little less room inside. A refrigerated trailer has thicker insulated walls and a refrigeration unit at the front, so the inside is slightly narrower and shorter. For temperature-sensitive freight see temperature-controlled trucking.
