Roll Handling

Roll stock handling, clamping and damage prevention

Roll stock is the most damage-prone freight in the paper and packaging sector, and almost all of the damage is created in the first and last ten minutes of the move rather than on the highway. A roll is a dense point load with a soft edge and a structural core, and every one of those three properties has to be respected by the equipment, the securement and the person operating the clamp truck. Get any of them wrong and the roll arrives with a crushed edge, an out-of-round core or a telescoped end, and the converter cannot run it even though it looks intact from a distance.

Orientation is the first decision. Rolls loaded on end are stable and use trailer floor space efficiently but concentrate weight and expose the top edge; rolls loaded on side roll easily and need chocks, cradles or racking to stay put. Which orientation applies depends on roll diameter, width, the grade of paper and what the receiving equipment can handle, and it should be settled between shipper and receiver before the trailer is spotted rather than argued about at the dock. We confirm it on the lane setup and carry it on the tender so the driver and the loader are working to the same plan.

Securement for rolls is specific and it is not optional. Chocks, blocking, void fill between rows and correctly rated straps keep a roll load in position through braking and cornering, and a roll that shifts in transit damages itself and everything beside it. Because rolls are heavy relative to their footprint, the load also has to be planned as a weight distribution rather than a stack, so that no axle group ends up carrying more than it legally can. Both requirements are routine for a carrier that runs paper regularly and unfamiliar to one that does not.

Handling equipment at each end determines what is even possible. A clamp truck with the wrong pad size, insufficient pressure control or an inexperienced operator will crush a roll during a single pick, and a receiver without a clamp truck at all cannot take side-loaded rolls no matter what the paperwork says. Confirming what equipment exists at both ends, and whether the receiver expects the driver to assist, is part of setting up a paper lane properly. It removes the two most common causes of refused deliveries in this sector.

Finally, the trailer floor and walls matter more here than on general freight. Protruding hardware, damaged flooring, exposed fasteners or a wall that has been repaired badly will mark a roll or tear its wrap, and torn wrap on paper is a moisture problem as well as a cosmetic one. A short trailer inspection before loading is the cheapest damage control available in this vertical, and it is a standing requirement on the paper lanes we run.

Mill Logistics

Moisture control, mill scheduling and drop trailers

Paper and board are hygroscopic, which is a technical way of saying they take on moisture from the air and change dimension and strength when they do. A load that gets wet at an open dock in a rainstorm, or that sits in a trailer with a leaking roof seam, can arrive with edge waviness, curl or delamination that makes it unusable on a converting line even though nothing was visibly soaked. This is why paper freight is fussy about trailer condition in a way that most dry freight is not, and why a trailer that would be perfectly acceptable for palletised consumer goods gets rejected at a mill gate.

The controls are simple and they have to be consistent. Trailers are inspected for roof and seam integrity before loading, wrap is kept intact, doors stay closed while the trailer is spotted, and loading and unloading happen under cover wherever the facility allows it. Where a lane runs through a cross-dock, the handling point is the exposure point, so on moisture-sensitive grades we plan direct movements in preference to consolidations even when the consolidated option looks cheaper on the rate sheet.

Mill scheduling is the other constraint that shapes this freight. Paper machines run campaigns, and a mill produces a given grade in a block and then changes over. That means outbound volume arrives in waves rather than evenly, and the freight plan has to absorb a surge without the mill running out of yard space. Drop trailers are the standard answer: a pool of trailers spotted at the mill that can be loaded off the machine as product comes off, then pulled when full. It converts a scheduling problem into an equipment problem, which is far easier to solve.

Downstream, converters run to a different rhythm. A corrugated plant or a folding carton converter is consuming to a customer order book and wants predictable inbound rather than waves, so the freight function sits between a producer that ships in blocks and a consumer that wants a steady drip. Managing that gap usually means some combination of staged warehousing, drop trailers at the converter end as well, and a firm delivery appointment discipline so that inbound does not arrive three trailers at once on a dock with one door.

The practical benefit of running the lane this way is that it takes cost out of both ends. Loading off the machine into a spotted trailer removes double handling at the mill, and a predictable inbound schedule lets the converter staff its receiving properly instead of paying overtime to catch up. Neither of those savings shows up in a rate comparison, which is exactly why they get missed when paper freight is bought on price per load alone.
