What does POD mean in logistics?
In logistics, POD usually means proof of delivery: the document the receiver signs to confirm the freight arrived, when it arrived, how many pieces were received and whether anything was damaged or missing. It is often the delivery copy of the bill of lading or the carrier's delivery receipt.
What does POD mean in shipping?
In ocean shipping, POD can also mean port of discharge, the port where the container is unloaded from the ship. It is paired with POL, the port of loading. On a booking or an ocean bill of lading, POD almost always means the port. On a trucking delivery, it means proof of delivery.
Is a POD the same as a bill of lading?
Not exactly, but they are often the same piece of paper. The bill of lading is the shipping contract and receipt issued at pickup. When the receiver signs the delivery copy of it at the destination, that signed copy becomes the proof of delivery. Some carriers use a separate delivery receipt instead.
Who signs the proof of delivery?
The receiver, or someone authorised by the receiver, signs it at delivery, usually with a printed name, the date and the time. The driver keeps the signed copy for the carrier. For a residential or white-glove delivery, the customer signs, often on the driver's phone or tablet.
What happens if I sign a POD without noting damage?
A clean signature is evidence that the freight arrived complete and in good condition, which makes a later damage claim much harder to win. Count the pieces and look for damage before signing, and write any problem on the POD itself, specifically: which pallet, how many cartons, what kind of damage.
What is an ePOD?
An ePOD is an electronic proof of delivery captured on the driver's phone or tablet. It usually includes the signature, photos of the freight, a timestamp and the GPS location, and it is available within minutes instead of days, which also speeds up invoicing.
What does OS&D mean on a delivery?
OS&D stands for over, short and damaged. It is the shorthand for exceptions at delivery: more pieces than the paperwork shows, fewer pieces, or freight that arrived damaged. Exceptions are written on the POD and reported to the carrier.
How long do I have to file a freight claim?
It depends on where the freight moved and the carrier's terms. For trucking in Ontario, the standard conditions of carriage require written notice of loss or damage within 60 days of delivery. In the US, the Carmack Amendment does not let carriers set a claim period shorter than nine months. Report concealed damage as soon as it is found. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do I get a copy of a POD?
Ask the carrier, or the broker who booked the load, using the PRO number or the bill of lading number. Most carriers can send a scanned or electronic POD the same day. If you booked with Qeep, we send it to you on request.
