On a four-hour lane, the border is the schedule
This is the single thing that separates Detroit from every longer corridor. Toronto to Chicago is a full driving day, so an hour at the booth is absorbed. Toronto to Detroit is under five hours of driving, so an hour at the booth is a fifth of the trip and a two-hour queue can miss a plant window entirely. The Ambassador Bridge is the shortest and by volume the busiest commercial crossing on the continent, with the Huron Church Road approach as its weak point.
